This Roswell homeowner contacted Georgia Roof Advisors after experiencing a leaking roof and concerns around several skylights and other roof penetrations. Because skylights can be vulnerable areas for water intrusion when their flashing, surrounding shingles, or seals deteriorate, addressing the roof meant looking beyond the shingles themselves. For this project, our team completed a full roof replacement using GAF Timberline HDZ Charcoal shingles, while also addressing the skylights as part of the overall roofing system.
The process began with removing the existing roofing materials so the roof could be properly evaluated and prepared for the new system. We then installed the necessary roof components and carefully worked around the roof penetrations, including replacing one skylight and completing skylight removal on two hallway skylights that were no longer being retained. Those openings were properly boarded and integrated into the new roofing system rather than simply covering them with shingles. We also replaced the existing pipe boots with Ultimate Pipe Boots, helping protect another common area where water can enter a roof.
Finally, the new GAF Timberline HDZ shingles were installed to create a clean, consistent finished roof. Skylight removal is not simply a matter of taking a window out of the roof—it requires properly addressing the opening, protecting the roof deck, integrating the surrounding underlayment and shingles, and making sure water has a reliable path away from the area. GAF’s roofing guidance similarly emphasizes the importance of properly integrating leak barriers, flashing, and shingles around roof penetrations. The result is a refreshed roofing system designed to address the homeowner’s leaking roof while giving the home a cleaner, more reliable roofline.
